OUR VERDICT

The Altra Torn 5.0 is a road shoe that can pretty much do it all. Light enough to go fast but with enough cushion to keep your feet happy during long runs or races. There really isn’t much on the roads that this shoe can’t do!

WHO IS IT FOR
The Altra Torin 5.0 is a great shoe choice for the runner that does a little bit of everything. From 5ks to marathons, and anything in between, the Torin 5.0 will hold up well and get the job done.

The Altra Torin 5.0 is the latest version of one the most popular models of road shoes in the Altra lineup. It is a lightweight and highly cushioned road shoe that can be expected to perform well at just about anything. Short and fast or long and slow, the Torin 5.0 will get the job done.

And as with all Altra models, the Torin 5.0 features the foot-shaped toe box and is built upon a zero-drop platform.

Altra Torin 5 First Impressions

My first impression of the Torin 5.0 was definitely positive.

The main things that stood out upon putting on the Torin 5s for the first time were how lightweight and comfortable they were. And the first run only furthered my initial impression that this had the potential to be a pretty darn good shoe.

Altra Torin 5 Sole Unit

The sole unit of the Torin 5.0 is composed of Altra’s EGO Max foam in the midsole coupled with their FootPod outsole (28mm total stack height). This combination provides plenty of cushioning, a little extra bounce, and a smooth ride with every step.

The EGO Max foam of the midsole provides a softer feel than the pervious version of the Torins, returning them to the more cushioned feel that this model was known for. The foam in the midsole does minimize the ground feel you get while wearing this shoe, but it does a great job of absorbing any rocks or debris that you encounter on the road.

The FootPod outsole encourages more natural movement of the foot while wearing the shoe. The outsole also provides ample grip/traction in both wet and dry conditions, and holds up quite well to the wear and tear of road running.

Altra Torin 5 Upper Unit

The Altra Torn 5.0 is comprised of a breathable mesh upper. The upper is comfortable, and the breathable material allows the upper to dry quickly if the shoes get wet during a run.

The Torin 5.0 fits true to size and features the foot-shaped toe box that allows your toes to splay to promote your body’s natural ability to balance and stabilize with every step. The heel cup is comfortable, but is still snug enough that the foot doesn’t move around during a run.

The only issue I have with the upper is the tongue. I had no issues during the first few runs, but before long I started to notice the tongue rubbing against my ankle/lower shin during my runs. The simplest way I found to really fix the issue was to fold the tongue over and then tie my laces on top of the folded tongue. Since tying my shoes this way, I’ve had zero issues with the tongue rubbing. And my “fix” hasn’t impacted the feel of the upper around my foot at all.

Altra Torin 5 Conclusion

The Altra Torin 5.0 is really a pretty good shoe. The tongue issue is annoying, but it was easy to fix and hasn’t caused any issues since I started folding it down. Other than that, the shoe just works. Whether I”m doing speed workouts, long runs, or anything else on the road, I haven’t had any issues with the Torin 5.

If you’re looking for a road shoe that can do a little bit of everything, the Altra Torin 5.0 is a shoe you should definitely consider.
