Garmin announces today the Forerunner 645 – with music!

Garmin officially announced today the release of the Garmin Forerunner FR645 – to replace the popular FR630 – with two versions: the FR645 and FR645 music.

The first changes are cosmetic: a metal bezel, chemically strengthened glass and interchangeable bands seem to start playing in Apple’s playground, for a watch that begs to be worn both while out running and in daily life.

The real feature many people have been waiting for is the introduction of music. A vast majority of people enjoy running with their favorite soundtrack in their ears – but don’t want to take their phone or music players with them, kind of defeating the purpose and comfort of only having to wear a watch on their wrist.

The 645 comes with enough storage to keep 500 songs (which I assume it means 2GB of storage, I didn’t find more accurate specs).

If storing music (and therefore uploading it and keeping it up to date on the device) is not for you, the 645 Music promises compatibility with popular music streaming services. Mentioned at launch are Deezer and iHeartRadio – which obviously screams “where’s Spotify??”.

Another new function is Garmin Pay, a contactless payment option.

The specs and functions that you would expect from a Garmin GPS watch of this range are all there: from both GPS and GLONASS standards, running dynamics and even 24/7 HR monitoring thanks to the wrist HR sensor – to customizable watch faces and display options.

Garmin talks about 7 days of normal watch battery life and 5 hours of GPS activity with music. It’s a bit disappointing to be honest – you would expect more, but I guess you pay the functions, connectivity and bright display in terms of battery life.

There will be a store (IQ store) where users will be able to download apps such as Uber, AccuWeather and more.

The Forerunner 645 will retail for $399 and the music version will be $50 more at $449. Release date is not set in stone yet, but we expect it to be by the end of the month.

Stay tuned – because we will review one!
