I love PureCadence 6; I like PureCadence 7. Here’s why: the reworked upper causes me to scuff the forefoot on the running surface. Since the sole unit is the same as the 6’s, what’s the deal?
The increased height of the forefoot fits less-snug than I prefer, and I can’t run as close to the ground. The 6 is my favorite 5k racer, but I’ll stick with longer runs with the 7 because of this awkward-feeling fit.
My podiatrist explained that it’s common for tendons to pull the toes up with forward leg-swing; mine don’t. If you get big-toe holes in your shoes, you’ll like this change.
Brooks PureCadence 7 General Info
Previous PureCadence models have shown more of a visible wrap around the midfoot than does the 7, which concerned me right out of the box: will the reworked upper be less supportive?
The newer version also looks more floppy, with “regular” shoe strings replacing the slightly-stretchy strands that gave the 6 custom fit. This year’s is half ounce lighter than before, in women’s size 10.
The snug fit nearly matches that of the 6, but in addition to the forefoot’s increased height, the heel has more room; it even measures 2 mm. wider at the ankle opening which is slight but enough for me to notice while running.
The new upper has a 7 mm. higher molded-rim on the toebox, by rough measurement; the material lacks the silky smooth brush in the shoe and shoe strings that distinguished the 6 from the crowd.
HOKA ONE ONE’s Arahi and the New Balance Vongo offer similar fit and support with a higher midsole. Saucony’s Liberty ISO is another comparable model.
Brooks PureCadence 7 Sole Unit
The adaptive function of Brooks DNA midsole material customizes the feel to a runner’s weight, pace, and impact, for a smooth, comfortable ride.

The outsole offers excellent grip even in wet conditions and has enough structure to protect the foot when running on gravel, without weighing the shoe down.
Brooks PureCadence 7 Upper Info
Before wearing a PureCadence 6 on one foot, 7 on the other, I thought the midfoot and heel fit was just as snug; it’s not, but close. The forefoot is noticeably different with 7mm (not a lot) more toe height, which many will appreciate.
The material feels and looks of poorer quality, this year’s woven upper designed with more room and slightly less stretch, but the inner bootie is just as soft with a sturdy heel counter.
The fit is closer to true-to-size, with a touch more room in the heel and forefoot matching the length.
Reflective patches surround the heel improving low-light visibility. Two-toned weave in the moderately-plush tongue adds appeal to the look. The arch is medium-low.
Brooks PureCadence 7 Conclusions
PureCadence 7 is a good shoe: comfort with responsiveness and light stability. It’s not a great shoe (for me), however, and for me to give 5 stars, it must be exceptional.
If the 6 felt too snug, keep in mind that the 7 is still narrow, but you may be happy with the small changes in upper fit atop a similarly stellar Brooks sole unit.
The best change brought into this new model is the reflectivity across the heel.
