Someone that is looking to really run fast without the assistance of a plate. And also someone that is not willing to break the bank.
If you are planning on racing a full marathon, I would NOT recommend the Hyper Speed 3. There are other options that will protect your legs and your feet for that distance.
The ASICS Hyper Speed 3 is a minimalist traditional racing flat that can be used for either your track workouts and/or your short distance races.
For the price tag of just $90 it is also a great budget shoe. And at only 6.8 oz. for a US men’s size 9, it feels light on your feet!
If you are not into plated racing shoes, this is a great choice.
As I opened the box, I noticed how much padding the upper had. For a lightweight shoe, and with the amount of upper padding it provided, I was a bit astounded.
And as I put them on my feet they felt really comfortable. My first run in them my legs felt like I had nothing on them because it felt low to the ground.
The upper for the Hyper Speed 3 uses a recycled engineered mesh. It is a fairly breathable upper that provides two layers. The outer layer feels somewhat of a plastically material that has a ton of ventilation. Its has the ASICS logo that delivers the structure to it. The inner layer uses somewhat of a cloth material that provides both softness and comfort.
I found the fit of the upper to be true to size. I would say that I have normal size feet and I had no discomfort or problems with the upper whatsoever. The toe box area had enough room for me to display my feet during my runs.
Both the lacing system and tongue seem to be pretty standard. The tongue was fairly thin but soft enough for a comfortable feel on the top of your foot. The tongue also provides some holes for breathability.
For a shoe that is lightweight it sure has a lot of structure to the heel counter. I guess you can say the heel counter is the total opposite of pliable. The heel counter provides a lot of padding as well, so your heel is pretty secured once you lace up.
The ASICS Hyper Speed 3 uses FLYTEFOAM as their midsole technology. It is a foam that is very lightweight and yet slightly responsive. The midsole has no special gimmicks like a carbon fiber plate or anything of that nature.
The heel drop is measured at 7mm, which means that the shoe will assist you to propel forward with your strides.
The midsole has a minimalist stack height, so you do feel somewhat low to the ground.
The outsole uses what they call ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR). The design of the outsole is very similar to the Magic Speed 3, where the rubber covers majority of the forefoot, and both lateral and medial sides.
I found the traction of the shoe to be very good. I felt comfortable running on different terrains such as the track, pavement, grass, and dirt.
After running well over 50 miles in this shoe, I have not seen any wear and/or tear on the outsole, which tells me that the durability is going to last for a while.
In conclusion, the ASICS Hyper Speed 3 is a really fun shoe.
I found this shoe to be my go-to shoe when it comes to track workouts. Although the trend to run and feel fast is running in a plated shoe, the Hyper Speed 3 will beg to differ.
For me, It was nice to get away from a plated racing shoe and actually get the sense of really running fast again with this traditional shoe.
With the Hyper Speed 3, you can control the shoe. The shoe will not control you. Would I buy this shoe again? I would have to say yes, absolutely! The price tag cannot be ignored.
